Imagining Beyond Our Limits was the theme of the 2023 Polity, Benefits, and Mission Conference, and the Reverend Dr. Frank Clark Spencer, Board President, shared in envisioning new pathways for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
Dr. Spencer, who envisions a future where all congregational pastoral leaders are in the Church’s Benefits Plan, talked about changing benefits for a changing Church. He updated the gathering on a season of rebuilding — the initiative to redesign the plan so congregations have the flexibility and choice needed to enroll their pastoral leadership for coverage. Proposed recommendations would enhance income protection plans, provide choice in healthcare coverage, create parity for all employees, subsidize small churches, create transparency in pricing, provide transition for those in Pastor’s Participation, and support innovative ministries.
The Reverend Dr. Jerry Cannon, Vice President of Ministry Innovation at the Board of Pensions, delivered the closing sermon for the conference, reminding gatherers that “believer’s strength” is critical to envisioning new pathways. “God is doing things that blow your imagination, if you will let God be God,” he said. “God is able to accomplish more in our lives than we can ever imagine.”
